By Kiril Galabov, Director of Engineering – Bulgaria, Abalta Technologies, Inc.

At Abalta, we’re no strangers to change. Whether evolving technologies, new engineers joining our Sofia development team, or the growing technical demands of OEMs in connected mobility, we’ve learned that how we face challenges is what defines our progress. Here are some of the key challenges we tackle daily—and how we turn them into opportunities for growth.

1. Guiding and Mentoring New Team Members

Over the years, we’ve come to deeply value teamwork as one of the cornerstones of our success. But great teamwork doesn’t just happen—it requires ongoing effort to build trust, foster open communication, and create a sense of shared purpose.

Leading our Bulgaria engineering team in today’s remote and hybrid environment, I’ve seen how critical clear communication becomes when coordinating development across San Diego and Sofia. While navigating time zone differences for technical reviews and architecture discussions presents scheduling challenges, our established engineering protocols help maintain code quality standards and team cohesion.

New team members are introduced not just to our tools and processes, but also to our culture: one that encourages humility, mutual support, and a readiness to lend a hand—whether or not the task falls within your official job description. It might sound like a cliché, but the power of a truly collaborative team can’t be overstated.

 2. Keeping Pace in a Rapidly Evolving Tech Landscape

The speed of technological advancement in automotive software can feel overwhelming—but it also drives our engineering team’s passion for innovation. From my experience across navigation, enterprise systems, and car infotainment, I’ve learned that staying ahead means embracing change and continuously evaluating new libraries, frameworks, tools, and development approaches.

This mindset has been key while working on SmartLink and WebLink, ensuring both their improvement and seamless integration with OEM systems. Not every new library or framework becomes part of our core stack—and that’s okay. What matters is that we stay aware, stay curious, and remain ready to pivot when something new genuinely enhances our capabilities.

3. Balancing Legacy Code with New Technologies

This is a tough one. Legacy code comes with its own challenges—technical debt, outdated patterns, and limited flexibility. Rewriting it from scratch is often tempting, but rarely practical.

Instead, we strive to strike the right balance: respecting what works while carefully introducing modern tools, languages, and practices that elevate our systems without risking stability. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s essential.

4. Choosing the Right Tech Stack for the Job

It’s easy to default to the tools we’re most comfortable with. But technology should serve the project—not the other way around.

When we embark on a new project or feature, we take a step back and ask: What does this challenge truly need? What will serve it best, not just now but in the long term? Having the confidence and flexibility to explore different stacks helps us make better decisions—ones that benefit both the product and the people maintaining it.

5. Aligning Business Goals with Personal Growth

Last but far from least: business goals aren’t just about the bottom line. They’re what give our work meaning.

We’re proud to say that our products help millions enjoy safer, more enjoyable driving experiences. Whether you’re a developer, designer, QA, or product manager, seeing your ideas come to life and hearing feedback from users—that’s powerful motivation.

No, we don’t always get it perfect the first time. But refining something until it truly delivers value? That’s the sweet spot. And it’s what keeps us all pushing forward—together.

Final Thoughts

None of this happens in isolation. Success isn’t a solo journey—it’s built on shared effort, mutual respect, and a passion for what we create.

At Abalta, we don’t just navigate challenges—we grow through them. And in doing so, we continue to shape not only better products, but better professionals and stronger teams.
